Botox is an FDA- approved prescription medicine that contains botulinum toxin type A injection which is primarily injected into facial wrinkles such as frown lines, crow’s feet around the outer sides of the eye and forehead creases. Botox is a temporary nerve toxin that targets underlying muscles which contract to form wrinkles and creases. When injected into desired area, the muscle is temporarily paralyzed which will then stop the muscle from contracting. This will then smooth and diminish mild to moderate lines and wrinkles in treated area. You should not lose the ability to show expressions when done by a licensed, trained, medical professional with expertise in the facial anatomy. This is a simple in office procedure that usually takes about 10-20 minutes. After your Botox treatment you will be able to go about your normal daily routine immediately after your treatment. Noticeable softening of injected lines may occur within 3-4 days, and full effect occurs within one to two weeks. Results last an average of three months.
In addition to cosmetic purposes, Botox can also be used to treat a variety of medical conditions such as chronic muscle spasms in hemifacial spasm or blepharospasm. Functional Botox is also administered the same way as cosmetic and can sometimes be covered by insurance. This procedure would also take about 10-20 minutes in an office setting and you will able to return to your daily activities immediately after.
